「トランスアヴァンガーディア」「トランスアヴァンギャルド」は、1970年代から80年代にかけてのイタリアのアートシーンを表すキーワードのひとつである。拡張していくアートの気分をもっともよく表した言葉。
美術評論家のアキッレ・ボニート・オリーヴァがこのムーブメントで主導的な役割を果たし、代表的なアーティストとして「3C」（サンドロ・キア、フランチェスコ・クレメンテ、エンツォ・クッキ）を挙げることができる。本書は、この時代のイタリア現代美術をよく表している。
