この3巻に収められた48のエッセイと写真・資料は、人間の身体観の歴史を世界的な視点で検証したものである、時代や地域あるいは職業、地位が異なると、身体に関する観念は大きく変わり、宗教、道徳、風俗など多面的な違いを見せている。

各巻で特定のテーマがあり、第一巻では、人間の身体と神的なもの、獣的なもの、そしてそれを模倣したり模擬したりする機械との関係を探る。第2巻では、魂の表出（あるいは生産）と感情の表現を研究することによって、また別の次元では、感覚、痛み、死から着想を得た思索を検討することによって、身体の「外側」と「内側」の接点を取り上げる。第3巻では、臓器や身体の物質が、人間社会の機能のあり方を正当化したり、異議を唱えたりするためにいかに利用されうるか、また逆に、政治的・社会的機能が、そこに充満する人物の身体を、より大きな身体（社会的身体や宇宙全体）の臓器とする傾向がいかにあるかを示すことで、臓器と機能の古典的対立を浮き彫りにする。

The 48 essays, photographs, and documents in these three volumes examine the history of the human body from a global perspective, showing that different times, regions, professions, and statuses have drastically different ideas about the body, as well as multifaceted differences in religion, morality, and customs.

Each volume has a specific theme, with the first volume exploring the relationship between the human body and the divine, the bestial, and the machines that imitate or simulate it. The second volume addresses the interface between the "outside" and the "inside" of the body by studying the expression (or production) of the soul and the expression of emotions, and on another level, by examining contemplations inspired by sensation, pain, and death. Volume 3, by showing how organs and bodily material can be used to justify or challenge the way human society functions and, conversely, how political and social functions tend to make the bodies of the persons who fill them organs of a larger body (the social body or the universe as a whole), This highlights the classical opposition between organs and functions.
