For hundreds of years, Indian women have passed on the techniques of creating ritual murals, drawings and decorations that function as messages to the gods to their daughters. It is the role of women to communicate with the gods. Murals and bas-reliefs are created to honor the gods and to attract their benevolent attention for special festivals. Stephen P. Huyler, an art historian, ethnologist, writer, and photographer who studies Indian folk art, introduces the artistic traditions that have been passed down for centuries by women in Indian villages, accompanied by 170 full-color photographs.
