According to photographer Balog, the future of the survivors of the approximately 900 species currently threatened with extinction are in captivity, the "twilight zone of the zoo."
By using techniques and concepts found in commercial photography, the endangered animals are shown prominently. For example, the mandrill looks like a model posing on a stool.
