For synthetic biologists, life forms are programmable matter. In this book, synthetic biologists, artists, designers, and social scientists discuss synthetic biology and design. It follows six boundary-crossing collaborations between artists and designers from around the world and synthetic biologists to help us understand what it means to “design nature.” These collaborations have produced biological computers that compute shapes, speculative packages that create their own content, and algae that feeds on circuit boards. These raise interesting questions about the scientific process, our relationship to designed materials, and the importance of critical engagement.
