The Naked Ape" (The Naked Ape) by zoologist Desmond Morris was published in 1967 and became a super bestseller, selling 10 million copies worldwide. The book was a major upheaval of the previous view of mankind by its thorough observation of man as an animal.
Titled "The Artistic Ape," the book examines the meaning of art for humans who have evolved from monkeys. Morris himself was a surrealist artist, and his work, which combines surrealist ideas with a zoologist's side, can be described as a critique of art and a critique of civilization. In 1957, among other things, he organized an exhibition of paintings and drawings by chimpanzees at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, the center of contemporary art in London. The exhibition included paintings by a young chimpanzee named Congo. Congo's paintings had a unique sensibility and were actually purchased by collectors.
