From thousands of war photographs, 135 were selected for this book and for an exhibition at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington.
Editor Frances Fralin and curator Jane Livingston set strict criteria. While they sought photographs that would leave a lasting impression, they excluded photographs of people everyone knew, war photos that were intentionally heroic or romanticized, sentimental and clichéd, and those that were "most bloody" or "emotionally aggressive. Thus, the "masters" of war photography were omitted and unfamiliar photographers were included. The photographs are arranged chronologically and well reproduced. Captions include dimensions, the process of taking the photographs, where they were taken, brief notes on the military conflict in which they were taken, and, in many cases, the text found with the photographs. An excellent bibliography and brief biography of the photographer are also included.
