遠隔操作ロボットは、1940年代に放射性物質を扱うために初めて開発された。
現在は、海底や宇宙空間の探査、爆弾の信管除去、危険な流出物の清掃などにロボットを使用しているし、空を飛ぶロボットであるドローンもある。
これらのロボットはインターネットからも制御できる。このようなロボットにはカメラが搭載されており、単に見ることができるだけでなく、ウェブカメラの域を超えている。

Remotely operated robots were first developed in the 1940s to handle radioactive materials.
Today, robots are used to explore the ocean floor and outer space, defuse bombs, and clean up hazardous spills, as well as drones, which are robots that fly in the sky.
These robots can also be controlled from the Internet. These robots are equipped with cameras and can not only see, but go beyond webcams.

This book summarizes the latest developments in Internet telerobotics. Robots that navigate under the sea, run on Mars, visit museums, float in airships, handle protein crystals, draw pictures, and hold human hands are all described. The book describes the 18 systems and shows how they were designed, how they work online, and what engineering challenges they meet.
