Michael Kenna has consistently captured landscapes from exceptionally unusual perspectives. His mystical photographs, often taken before dawn or at midnight, focus on the interaction between the ephemeral atmospheric conditions of natural landscapes and man-made structures or sculptural masses. Kenna is a photographer who shoots day and night, captivated by the hours when light is most malleable. Using non-digital equipment, his night exposures can last up to ten hours, and his photographs often capture details invisible to the human eye. 
Kenna's intimate, meticulously hand-finished monochrome photographic prints reflect a refined sensibility, a reverence for history, and a thorough originality. They have been exhibited in numerous galleries and museums worldwide and are held in permanent collections including the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris, the Shanghai Art Museum, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Over 40 books and catalogues dedicated to Kenna's work have been published.
