本書に収められたエッセイは、著者の最初の4冊がフランスで出版された数年間に書かれたものである。実存主義やマルクス主義の語彙（文学の社会的状況や歴史以前の作家の責任についての考察）から、（バシュラール以降の）物質の精神分析、（レヴィ＝ストロースやラカンの理解へと明らかにバルトを導いた）精神分析的人間学へと、バルトの批評の道筋が描かれている。

This book is a good look at the ideological itinerary of Roland Barthes.
The essays in this book were written during the years in which the author's first four books were published in France. They chart Barthes's critical path from existentialism and Marxist vocabulary (his reflections on the social condition of literature and the responsibility of pre-historical writers) to the psychoanalysis of matter (after Bachelard) and psychoanalytic anthropology (which clearly led Barthes toward an understanding of Levi-Strauss and Lacan).
